Adam Thorogood

Adam has had a passion for woodlands since he built dens in the New Forest in Hampshire as a muddy-kneed child. Over the years he has built up his knowledge of woodlands through personal experience and observation and through training and education. From coppicing and greenwood crafts to forestry and the timber industry, Adam has a broad breadth of woodland knowledge and supports Dyfi Woodlands in practical woodland crafts and management. He is halfway through completing a Masters in Forestry at Bangor University.

Zena lives and works in the Dyfi Valley and is involved in local nature conservation and woodland education projects. She is particularly interested in participative approaches to woodland management, traditional skills and crafts, biodiversity, wildfood, and health & wellbeing benefits of woodlands. Zena is an experienced outdoor educator and level three Forest School leader.

Zena has a first class degree in biology and postgraduate certificate in forestry and a background in social and environmental research. A long standing interest in woodlands and forests led her to work in the forestry sector. In addition to her role with Dyfi Woodlands, Zena works for the Welsh project of the Small Woods Association, Coed Lleol. Zena has delivered successful projects for organisations such as Forestry Commission Wales, Forest Research, Llais y Goedwig and the Centre for International Development and Training.

Tom Deacon

Tom's passion for nature and all the great outdoors has to offer was kindled by family holidays in the wild and rugged extremities of Wales and the Cornish peninsula. After graduating with a first class degree in Ocean Science and Geography Tom has spent much of his working life as an environmental educator, mainly for the Field Studies Council in South Devon and North Wales. Sharing his love of land and nature through education has also led Tom into Forest Schools were he is a Level 3 Forest School Leader. Tom has a strong interest in developing educator's skills and confidence in taking learning outdoors. He develops and facilitates training relating to environmental education, transformative learning and learning for sustainability, also offering ongoing mentoring support for outdoor educators, countryside wardens and school teachers.

Through all aspects of his work Tom continues to seek and develop new and innovative ways to engage and inspire people in the natural world. Since 2012 Tom has been heavily involved in exploring the role of values, frames and empowering learners for positive change; all aspects of the Real World Learning Network, a European network of educators exploring core elements of and approaches to outdoor learning for sustainability.

Melissa Harvey

Melissa is currently on an extended sabatical taking a lead role in a Community Supported Agriculture initiative and facilitating composting in schools. She continues to play an important part in directing Dyfi Woodlands from the sunny fields and school grounds of Devon.
